An Overview About Directional Antenna And Its Advantages

By Richard Richardson

The purpose of this antenna is to radiate power into one or more than one directions. This capability has resulted to allowing the device on maintaining the increase in performance for receiving and transmitting the transmissions. It focuses on the strength and transmits the power to one, general direction only, thus, resulting to minimized loss of signal and optimized strength of signal.

Most of these antennas have their ability as well on reducing the interference coming from many sources. Thus, making a directional antenna become the most ideal and popular for use in areas where there are many interference. The interference may usually include some of the transmitting devices such as for weather conditions, some other obstructions, and microwave ovens.

These kinds of antennas are being classified into 2 different types such as the log periodic and the corner reflector. Usually, directional antennas are combined and commonly made available for use as television antennas, specifically designed for in most residential areas. Being used as cellular repeaters is another common purpose. This is used to receive and to transmit signals that are normally out of range for other cellular phones.

Antenna directions usually are very important for the set up directional antennas. When there is a wrong direction, the abilities an antenna has can be rendered useless. So it would better for areas to be checked first before starting the installation process. Through this, you can know what type of antenna will be used since you already know the potential sources of obstruction and interference.

The direction to which the device is being pointed is another important factor that you need to consider. This device is said to be very effective if it will be pointed towards the source of the target signal which is very near to it. This signal has the least interference and obstruction amount. This is the very reason why the process of mounting is considered a big issue.

Usually, there are some limitations when it comes to the coverage and this is because one general area has been focused only. In larger areas in which a larger coverage is also needed, the device becomes less effective. Thus, for a larger coverage, omni directional types are being recommended for use instead. Omni types have the ability to transmit and receive signal to several directions.

The best areas for the installation are in outdoors or other open areas such as outside the home. Usually, closed spaces have more obstructions which can generally limit its effectiveness. However, before purchasing these antennas, make sure to consider importantly the advantages and limitations.

Security issue is a very common advantage. These devices help to prevent the wormhole attacks. During the attacks, from attackers, a packet will be forwarded through an out of band link which is in high quality and this packet is replayed to the other locations. And thus, resulting to the disruption of all communications.

Lastly, one common limitation could be deafness. This usually happens when devices are being used. Network performances will become limited. There are also multiple retransmissions causing the misunderstanding of the nodes between connection since both the route search and mobility are triggered, thus, interactions between upper layers are distracted.
